7.13.0-RC3 is out!

Dear Tribler Community,

We’re thrilled to introduce Tribler 7.13.0-RC3. In this iteration, we’ve implemented crucial stability fixes identified in 7.13.0-RC2.

What’s new in 7.13.0-RC3

  • We’ve squashed a bug that allowed Tribler to run duplicate instances, eliminating unwanted second windows.
  • Tribler is now equipped to deal gracefully with low disk space situations during upgrades.
  • We’ve rectified an issue causing crashes on Ubuntu 22.04 when selecting files.
  • Several factors contributing to Tribler freezes and slowdowns have been addressed and rectified.
  • We’ve corrected an error that prevented the Tribler window from un-minimizing correctly when clicking on a torrent file.

What’s new in 7.13.0-RC2

We’ve tackled issues with Tribler’s core occasionally freezing and becoming unresponsive. After rigorous testing, we’ve tracked down and remedied these issues, resulting in critical components of Tribler now running up to 100 times faster. Additionally, many causes of startup/shutdown crashes have been eliminated, making this release faster and more stable.

Key updates since Tribler 7.12

Instant Search with Superior Result Quality:

  • Enjoy lightning-fast local search queries, now up to 100 times faster.
  • Receive real-time remote results from other peers instantaneously.
  • Benefit from an improved ranking algorithm considering title structure, creation date, and the number of seeders/leechers.
  • Discover similar results now conveniently grouped for a streamlined UI experience.

We’ve overhauled the search functionality and are sure you’ll enjoy the changes. The distributed search will deliver even better results as more peers update to this new version!

With these updates, Tribler is gradually evolving into a decentralized search engine, rivaling the speed of YouTube’s video search.

Introducing the Knowledge Component: A Leap Towards Decentralized Search Excellence

Just as Google leverages its PageRank algorithm, we are working on creating a decentralized alternative to Big Tech. With this release, we’re closer to achieving self-organizing trust, a fundamental building block for a decentralized PageRank system. We have evolved the BitTorrent tag-based metadata enrichment into the Knowledge Component. This new feature offers semantic clustering within Tribler when searching for “Ubuntu”, making search results cleaner and duplicates easier to filter out.

Enhanced Torrent Health: Accurate Sharing Between Peers

Tribler peers now exchange information about torrent popularity more accurately. This update corrects critical bugs in the previous algorithm that caused invalid torrent health records to propagate through the network, affecting the results on the “Popular” page. With these bugs fixed and the gossiping algorithm optimized, efficient sharing of popular torrents is now a reality.

Improved Stability for a Smoother Experience

We’ve worked to identify and fix numerous obscure bugs that previously caused crashes and freezes. We’re confident you’ll appreciate this latest release’s enhanced stability and reliability.

Note: Some antivirus software falsely flags the Windows 32-bit version of Tribler. When investigating the issue, we found that the Python builder we use (PyInstaller) is being flagged even for a simple hello world program. So, your antivirus might flag Tribler as malware if you’re using the 32-bit version. Therefore, we suggest you use the 64-bit version if you can.

If you encounter any problems using this release, you can create an issue ticket on GitHub or post it here in this forum.

For developers willing to contribute to Tribler with bug fixes or new features, please check out the Tribler contributing page, which provides the basic guidelines.

And as always, you can find the Tribler source code on our Github repository or download it directly.

We hope you’ll enjoy using this version.
Cheers!
