What is credit mining? Is it dangerous?

Ok, so I understand that the credit mining ystem automatically downloads parts of popular files and makes them available for upload.
But does it use the TOR part of the Tribler network to do this, or am I some kind of partial exit node when using this feature?
The developers really should make more effort in writing some instructions for the normal users if they want this software to become more popular and do some research on big data.
