Tribler V5.2 : the moderation edition (beta)

Postby root » Fri Feb 26, 2010 2:03 pm

Tribler V5.2 is now avaialble in Beta. Key new feature: P2P moderation.

http://www.tribler.org/download/Tribler_5.2.0rc11.exe
See http://www.tribler.org/Download for Mac and Ubuntu

You can help us improve moderation by following these instructions:
* install Tribler V5.2 Beta
* search for "avi" or "mp3"
* check how fast that goes and complain in this forum if slower than halve a second
* click on "Channels" in upper menu
* click on the channel named "LegalTorrents: Movies" and hit "subscribe"
* that is it! you have done your part for world peace & science of self-organising systems

Please leave a message in this thread if this Beta works OK, fails, something is unclear !

In Tribler V5.2 every user can start their own "Channel" to publish torrents. When people like your torrents you become popular and essentially become the owner of an Internet TV channel. You can moderate this RSS-like stream of torrents. This feature is designed to stop the flow of spam in P2P bittorrent, without the requirement of any server. Moreover, Tribler V5.2 is the first P2P client which offers the whole chain from searching to downloading without any server + has spam protection.

Tribler now offers an alternative for web-based Bittorrent portals. Such portal require a lot of money to keep operational and will not easily scale to Youtube-level audiences. Tribler is a collaborative effort by numerous universtities and we try to understand the future of television. Our P2P download engine runs on the playstation and embedded 400MHz platforms. So help us bug-fix this software and it will go into your TV by 2015:-)

Install work fine
The search engine works fine, some search results turn up almost immediately, but to load them all it takes about three seconds.
Couldn't find that channel tho

EDIT: oh never mind, you have to chose Channels next to the search button. ^^

Everything worked just fine,

No problems with installing and no problems with subscribing.

although I have to complain, according to your rules, since the search for both mp3 and avi took over ½sec. Even though most of the results appear almost instantly ( about 40-50 results ), it takes about 3 seconds for the search to ''complete'' ( after which you have 74 - 99 results, for respectively mp3 and avi ). And it takes about 10 seconds for the '' loading-wheel '' to disappear ( although after 3 seconds, no more results come up ).

But this feature is Decentral? no Trackers is needed?
How it works then over DHT?

and End to End Encryption is not yet implemented?

I want the features like

-Decentral
-End to End Encryption
-F2F

About i tested the new Channels features, but this means its not yet secure.
Feature Requests:
1.Live Streaming/Broadcasting from Tribler Gui
2.Decentral Feature which can deactivate connect to non Friends or to Tribler Server.
3.Secure End to End Encryption
4.Feature to can Add Friends(Puplic key echange and authentication) .

That was my bad. I neglected to put the python-vlc package in the site. Should be fixed now, normal install/update will work.

The channels are gossiped around using signed messages, so this is completely decentralized (once you are bootstrapped into the Tribler overlay network)

blub wrote:How it works then over DHT?

You find channels and the Torrents in those channels though the Tribler overlay, once you start downloading the data (movie, music, etc.) that a torrent points to, you go into the BitTorrent engine which uses a Tracker, DHT, and PEX (whatever is available) to find peers who are also in the swarm.

Correct, communication between peers is not encrypted.

How long we must wait anytime in future we get secure Tribler?
For me its was High Priority make Project secure robust, and decentral.

Channels feature added to gui, but no Easy Broadcasting from Gui.
It looks like Tribler devs wont be want Secure?

Its now One Year ago no End to End, no easy Broadcasting from gui, no Decentral functionality, No F2F....
Feature Requests:
1.Live Streaming/Broadcasting from Tribler Gui
2.Decentral Feature which can deactivate connect to non Friends or to Tribler Server.
3.Secure End to End Encryption
4.Feature to can Add Friends(Puplic key echange and authentication) .

While I do have some influence in what is implemented, or given priority, I do not have the final say in these things. Although a anonymity proxy seems to be high on the agenda, and this would very likely benefit from point-to-point encryption as well.

Point to Point Encryption will be good for Anonymous data transfer, like

Mute and StealthNet using Point to Point Encryption too .
