Cannot Download Torrents (Arch Linux, Tribler 5.9.12)

Hi all. I'm just getting up and running with Tribler 5.9.12 and I am having trouble and strange behaviors when downloading. I can search and locate torrents, my ports 5569-5570 are open on TCP and UDP (tribler reports port status 'connected'), but when I click the download button, it goes gray, brings up a message saying the torrent file is being downloaded from the dht, but then nothing shows up in the downloads list. I tried downloading a couple Ubuntu releases since they had seeds/popularity.

As an experiment, I just threw a regular .torrent file at Tribler, and it said 'download started' (but did not show up in the list). It actually created the file from the .torrent and seemed to eventually complete the download, but, alas, still nothing in the list.

Any ideas?

Hi Pebby,

From your log I can see that you do not have swift installed. As your not using Ubuntu, you will need to compile it yourself.
See if you can locate the SwiftEngine folder in your Tribler install dir.
If you cannot locate it, please check out swift from our svn: http://svn.tribler.org/libswift/trunk/

Next go into the folder and do make clean, make.
This will create a swift binary which you need to place in the root of your tribler install dir.
As a dependency swift requires libevent 2.0.17 or higher (we use 2.0.17 to compile).

Thanks, Niels. I compiled and installed swift and then ran again. Still no such luck. The log file is different - it doesn't complain about not finding swift, but I still can't download. Here's a new log file: https://gist.github.com/2880614

If it's any help, I also notice that no .torrents are being created in my collected_torrents directory.

I have more or less the same problem. Ever since i updated to version 13 and later 14, when i tried to download anything, or even load my own on my channel, it says
".torrent file is being downloaded from the dht, this could take a while"
two days and several tries later, still no download.
My laptop is a win7 64x, i checked and everything is as it should be, and swift is installed and working.

Same thing: ".torrent being downloaded from dht" ... and then nothing happens, although it is already 5.9.21.
Tribler has also stopped downloading files already on the list, it does 3-4 KB/s at most while uploading seems to be normal. Still, it is eating all the resources of my new DELL computer. It takes me ages to open a browser for example even when downloading is on 0.0 KB/s for hours.
Furthermore, reputation has never changed since I installed Tribler, "0 B Down 0 B Up" despite several gigabytes I have downloaded and even more gigabytes that have slipped up...
Please, help.

This should work, the comment form schaap is incorrect. The reputation is calculated over all bit torrent traffic.
From your log I can see that some bit torrent have messages are failing. This could cause some problems with downloading, but not downloading a torrent from the dht.

Just studied your log file. Not the expert, unlike Niels, but Tribler should do something. What OS and version are you running on your Dell? Have you tried downloads without a DHT, please try: http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent.
Have you tried moving your .Tribler directory?

I don't know what a DHT is.
And are you suggesting I should delete my factory-set Windows and install Ubuntu?

The DHT is a distributed way of getting your .torrent files and connecting to them without a tracker (as classic BitTorrent uses). Tribler, if you use the built-in search function, uses the DHT for both.

What root is suggesting is not to throw away your Windows installation. Ubuntu images, since they are free and well available, are great for testing whether you can actually download using a BitTorrent client. What we'd like you to do is to download the .torrent file provided by that link and then try and download the Ubuntu image by adding the .torrent file to Tribler. That way you can test whether Tribler can actually download - without depending on the DHT. It's step 1 to try and figure out your problems.

If you feel like trying Ubuntu afterwards, be my guest - though I'd suggest Wubi at first. If you don't that's quite fine as well.
